The historic English-American Building, dubbed the Flatiron Building because of its narrow, triangular shape, is the oldest standing steel-framed "skyscraper" in Atlanta. The design by Bradford Gilbert of New York City is one of Atlanta's most striking examples of the "Chicago Style" in urban architecture, establishing a pattern for much of the city's later downtown buildings. Constructed in 1887, and approaching its 100th year, Atlanta's version of this unusual architectural design predates New York's more famous example by five years, which shares its shape and unique design.
The architecture and construction of the Flatiron Building is one of the first examples of the then-revolutionary technology used to create some of the nation’s first high-rise buildings before the turn of the century. It played an important role in structuring the environment of downtown Atlanta and remains a distinctive part of its architectural landscape.
Located at the intersection of Peachtree and Broad Streets, the Flatiron Building is associated with some of Atlanta's most interesting and influential businessmen and city builders. Original tenants of this building included the English-American Company, Otis Brothers, Rand McNally Company, Southern Bell, the Atlanta Society of Medicine, and the National Register Company. In 1920, Georgia Savings & Trust Company purchased the English-American Building, and the name changed to reflect the new owner until 1974 when the building was bought by Hamilton Bank and Trust Company. Virtually unchanged from its original design, this historic building has been owned by James Cumming and Historic Urban Equities since 1978.
